The Charities

Despite being beaten by the weather last year, the total raised from the swim combined with other fundraising events was in the region of £2,000.

This was split evenly between the 3 chosen charities – Imibala, Island Youth Water Activities Centre and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.

We were not able to meet our targets last year but will continue to support worthwhile causes as we at Hularama believe in people and the good work and communities they create. We hope our small effort can go long way to making a big difference! Thank you for your support.

Please read below for a description of the 3 charities we are supporting this year.

Imibala

Hularama have continued supporting Imibala after successfully raising monies for 2 years through various events such as the 10K Great Run in Manchester and the British Heart Foundations, Hearts Pier to Pier swim in Bournemouth and a crazy paddle across the Solent to the glorious surrounds of Robin Hill for the weekend. Our efforts have helped towards the purchase of a mini bus for Somerset West School, South Africa. We feel this is an enormous achievement and thank all persons involved throughout the years.

Our new aim through our continued support is putting underprivileged children through their education in South Africa, paying much needed resources and school fees. We aim to raise money towards the school funds needed to enable sponsored children to access an education.

We at Hularama HQ believe every child should have the right to an education and will do our very best to help raise money and give the less fortunate children of today a chance to learn, achieve, develop and become a success of tomorrow.
Please join us and show your support and help children access an education.

IYWAC

St Catherine's is a national charity working with children and young people with speech, language and communication disabilities.  Our residential centre on the Isle of Wight encompasses a special school and further education centre, intensive speech and language therapy, excellent care facilities and a comprehensive vocational training programme.  The children and young people come from the Isle of Wight and from across the UK.

In addition to its centre, the St Catherine's team provides outreach services to schools and other voluntary organisations and support and advice to parents and families.   www.stcatherines.org.uk

Christopher’s smile is a campaign set up at The Institute of Cancer Research. It is being run by the parents of a 5 year old child called Christopher who died in June this year from a childhood cancer called ‘medulloblastoma’. Christopher died unnecessarily as currently there are no treatments available to specifically treat children with cancer, having to make do with drugs adapted from adult treatments which are often wholly unacceptable.

Our scientists here at The Institute of Cancer Research believe that they can develop the drugs needed to treat children with cancer. Childhood cancer is underfunded as it is a rare cancer compared to breast and lung cancer (for example), however 1500 children in the UK are still diagnosed each year, with 25% of them not surviving.

The Institute of Cancer Research is Europe's leading cancer organisation and with one of the best drug development units in the world it will be best placed to make these developments. Christopher's parents are currently aiming to raise £25,000 to get things started, and their ultimate vision is to help prevent other children and parents going through the same devastating experience that they had to go through with Christopher.
